ECE/transitions Hui - Te Whāriki Introduction

ECE/transitions Hui - Te Whāriki Introduction

On Wednesday 14 March I attended the ECE transitions hui. This is a meeting that occurs within the Hornby cluster, where Primary teachers and the feeding/local ECE centres meet and discuss things of relevance. Main focuses have been transitioning to school documents and oral language development. This session we had an expert 'Dr Kathryn O'Sullivan' on the new version of Te Whāriki (the early childhood curriculum). There is so much crossover within the document for those starting school so it was interesting to really look at this. The new document is a truly bicultural document, which is really amazing. I was able to learn so much more about this and really all of the Primary teachers walked away wishing the New Zealand curriculum could be updated in such a way. The whole meaning behind even the title being about a woven mat and the way the strands weave together to make it. It was also great to be provided with a large number of resources, such as Whakatauki cards each with their own meaning and these were something that can easily be taken back to our school and discussed at meetings with staff.

We have used the Whakatauki cards during different hub meetings:

- He purapura i ruia mai i Rangiatea e kore e ngaro - A seed sown in Rangiatea will never be lost.
We really liked this one as we found it went with our home base songs that Arama made for us.
